1- The negotiations
Napoleon Bonaparte's negotiations in the Louisiana Purchase were very important. With out his negotiations the purchase wouldn't have happened. His first negotiation was with Spain. In 1801 of November, King Rufus had sent James Madison a copy of the treaty that Spain had transferred Louisiana to France. Napoleon had sent a French colonial official to receive the trade of Louisiana from Spain to France, who arrived in March 1801 at New Orleans. The government became fond of the purchase of New Orleans, an important city river, and mouth of the river. Napoleon Bonaparte took back vast stretches of land west of the Mississippi River (also known as the Mississippi), known as Louisiana in 1801. Sadly for him there were many reasons as to why he had to sell the land.
This was all but necessary. He had lost a fierce battle in Saint Domingu (present-day Haiti). The battle took up all of the very important resources, and cut off the access to various ports of the southern coast of North America. Other reasons why he had to sell the land, is due to the increasing of population, and the weakness of the French navy. They needed the navy to maintain the land far away from their home, separated by the Atlantic ocean.
Lastly, is because Napoleon wanted to take over England. So he decided to try, and bind his resources so he could focus on conquering. The French general then canceled the American's proposal of purchasing New Orleans. He decided to give France's North American possessions as the Louisiana Purchase. This purchase had been led by United States Secretary of State James Madison. American negotiators had taken advantage of the agreement and then on behalf of the President, signed it. By a vote of twenty-four against seven, the Congress had approved of the treaty back in the United States.
