2-States Involved in the Louisiana Purchase
There were 11 states involved in the Louisiana Purchase. The states involved were Louisiana, Missouri, Arkansas, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Oklahoma. Louisiana was the 18th state to join the Union on April 30, 1812. In 1682, Robert Cavelier claimed this land for France. During this he also named this land Louisiana in honor of Louis XIV. In 1762 a secret treaty gave Spain the ability to have the Louisiana area. This state remained in control by Europe until 1803.
Also in 1803, at the same time Louisiana was no longer in control, the U.S. bought the state as part of the Louisiana Purchase. Missouri had also been included in the purchase. Missouri became the 24th state of the U.S. on August 10, 1821. Michigan be came the 26th state to enter the grouped union, on January 26, 1837. As the 29th state added to the union, Iowa was in the Louisiana Purchase. It became a state on December 28, 1846. At many times France ruled over it (after 1682 and from 1800-1803) as well as Spain (1762-1800).
Then the 32nd state was Minnesota, on May 11,1858, as part of the famous purchase as well. The area had been uncolonized until 1819 due to the first American settlement and when it had been founded. Nebraska was the 37th state added to the union on March 1st, 1867, and added to the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. It was explored and occasionally exploited or abused for animal furs by the Spanish and the French. The British also claimed it, but the Treaty of Paris (1763) recognized Spanish rights.
Colorado's name "Centennial State", marks the fact that Colorado had joined the Union as the 38th state in the hundredth year in the country: August 1, 1816. Colorado was the first explored in 1540. South Dakota was first explored in the 1730s by the French. North Dakota is the 40th state and joined the Union on November 2, 1889. The land had been unexplored until 1742 by the Europeans.
Oklahoma became the 46th state on November 16, 1907. There farming was badly damaged in the 1930s due to drought. This drought caused a lot of topsoil to blow away. As part of the Louisiana Purchase, it had been previously and federally administrated "Indian Territory".
